Small animals can really hurt cars. This was the result of a trash panda strike. .

Story Time!

On the way to school one day, the bus clipped a dog. A BIG dog. Poor thing died right in the middle of the lane between two hills. In fact, between these two hills:

The body was lying right about where that black truck is in the image.

The day was really hot and the dog inflated like a balloon. I discovered this as my friend and I crested this very hill in his 1978 Pinto. Unfortunately, there was a truck coming from the other direction at the same time.

If you aren’t familiar with Pintos, they aren’t known for their ability to stop on a dime. My friend did the only thing he could do - aim for the middle of our lane and try to straddle the dog.

The other thing Pintos aren’t know for is ground clearance. We didn’t have enough. As we passed over the dead, bloated dog, we could feel him thumping against the floor pan of the Pinto. An eternity passed as the dog drummed out a rhythm worthy of Neil Pea rt.

When I looked back, all I could see was a stiff-legged, bloated up dog doing barrel rolls down the lane. I should have been horrified by the carnage, but all I could do was laugh. Perhaps it was the ranting coming from the driver’s seat that really set the memory. My friend was not looking forward to the mess he expected to find under his car.

To this day, I remember that dog every time someone mentions a Pinto.

There’s one that lives around the farm that has got very large. Probably from the local estate and found a better life here.
